GENERAL PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Select
a specific planting site as closely resembling the plant's natural habitat
as possible. Remove debris and weeds. If the
soil is too compacted (clay, etc.), work up well with a loosening tool
of some sort and add rich composted material to the site.
This should provide most nutrients as well as improved drainage and aeration.
Don't forget shade, sun or such issues as the
need for extra moisture for bog-type plants and higher, dryer elevations
for others.
For perennial bulbs, tubers and rootstock, simply plant slightly below
the surface of the ground. Where a root mass is involved, place the root
structure in as natural as possible position, leaving
only the crown tip slightly under the surface or barely exposed.
When
planting trees, shrubs or any plants having some kind of
above ground dormant structure, make sure the root system
is covered only up to the plant trunk or stem. During dry, hot
transplanting seasons be sure to keep the soil moist (not soaked)
until the plant is thriving on its own.
Remember,
the best time for transplanting is from October 1
through April 15.
Rock
Island Wildflowers will accept orders year round and ship
at the proper planting time for your area. Shipping normally
begins around October 1 and ends about April 15. Some items
such as tubers, bulbs and ferns can be shipped year round.
Some orders can result in split shipments depending on the
availability of some items. In these cases we pay the additional
shipping and handling charges. We offer spring or fall shipping
options. If an item is depleted, we will hold your order and ship during
the next shipping season.
